The course
How does the training work?
Are you eligible?
Potential applicants should read about the GTP programme and general conditions of entry as given on the TDA web site. Specific entry requirements apply for the Mid Somerset Consortium. Please note the details on “The Person specification” document found in our application pack.
To be eligible for the GTP:
  • Applicants must have GCSE grade C or above in both English and Maths.
  • Have a first degree awarded in England or Wales.50% of your degree must be in the subject you wish to teach.
  • Applicants must have original certificates for all qualifications, though when applying photocopies need to be sent. Do not send original documents. Originals documents will be needed at the interview stage.
  • The MSC is also interested to hear from people with degrees who have worked as classroom assistants/cover supervisors or technicians in an educational institution.
  • International qualifications refer to NARIC. www.naric.org.uk
Do I need teaching experience?
The MSC would prefer to consider applicants who have some experience of working with young people, though this is not essential. The application will be strengthened if any of the following are included:
  • Experience in teaching and training young people and/or adults
  • Working as a Learning Support Assistant or Cover Supervisor
  • Voluntary work with young people's groups
  • Acting as a classroom helper or a teacher's aide
The strongest candidates might have regular voluntary part or full time or paid experience as a Teaching Assistant, Cover Supervisor or unqualified teacher.
Experience
As part of the training you will need to have experience of KS2 children. Prior to starting training it would be beneficial to the candidate if he/she is able to spend some time in a primary school. Documented evidence would be needed to support this visit (brief report on headed school note paper).
